Luanti Before October 31: Find a Server and Keep Your Worlds Compatible

A world worth keeping. A community worth finding again.
31OCTOBER 2026

Understand Luanti’s October 31 server-list change, choose a game, protect saved worlds and check compatibility before your next session.

Start with the experience you want to keep

A familiar mountain, a carefully furnished house, and the people who helped build it can all feel like one game. In Luanti, they depend on different pieces. The engine runs the experience; the chosen game supplies its rules; additional mods can change those rules; the world stores the result. Online, a server operator also determines which combination is available. Knowing which piece changed saves more time than repeatedly reinstalling everything.

Luanti, formerly Minetest, is an open-source voxel game platform rather than a single standardized survival adventure. Its official site currently lists version 5.17.0, released August 20, 2026, with desktop and Android availability. You can use it for solo worlds or multiplayer, and the variety extends beyond building and mining. A screenshot showing animals, furniture, or elaborate machinery therefore illustrates a particular content setup, not a promise about every fresh installation. Luanti overview

What changes on October 31

The Luanti team's October 3 announcement schedules removal of 0.4.x servers from the public server list on October 31, 2026. As of this article's date, that deadline is still ahead. The stated reason is known critical vulnerabilities in an unmaintained series, including aging dependencies that will not receive the relevant fixes. This is a change to public discovery, not an announcement that every privately operated server will shut down or that local worlds will be erased. Server-list announcement

For someone returning to an old community, the useful question is its maintained upgrade plan. Check the operator's announcement channel before arranging a group session. Continued technical availability does not establish that an obsolete server is safe. This guide does not recommend retaining unsupported software to get around the listing change.

Nor should every server carrying a 5.x label be treated as current: the announcement also flags concerns about early 5.x versions. Ask which release the operator actually runs. The practical goal is to keep your community playable on maintained software, rather than preserve an old entry in a directory at any cost.

Install a game before assembling a mod collection

For a new solo player, follow the first-launch game selection rather than downloading a random assortment of mods. The official getting-started guide directs players to the content browser to install a game; its Content area also separates mods and texture packs. The documentation recommends the Tutorial game for an interactive introduction to common mechanics. Getting started

Decide what you want from the first evening: learning movement and interaction, building without a progression goal, or following a particular game's survival systems. Then read that game's description and instructions. Do not choose solely because a package name resembles something you played years ago. Keep the first world simple enough that you can identify which features belong to the game itself.

Online play follows a different route. The server handles its gameplay mods, and the client receives the resources needed to join. You do not need to recreate the server's entire content collection as a personal single-player installation. Installing extra local mods is not the normal remedy when a server connection fails.

Give the landscape its own decision

A map generator determines the terrain around you, and the engine provides several choices when a world is created. In the official descriptions, v7 emphasizes broad landscapes, high mountains, and large water channels; carpathian combines varied mountains with extensive plains; valleys places rivers within hills and mountain valleys. Flat provides a level starting surface while still supporting features such as caves and biomes. Map generators

The selected game still matters. Games and mods define biomes for most generators, so sharing a generator name does not guarantee identical scenery across different content setups. Start a separate experiment when comparing landscapes. A disposable terrain sample lets you decide whether the surroundings suit your plans before committing hours to a permanent base. Leave a valued existing world's settings alone while conducting that comparison.

Back up the world, not just the screenshot

A world includes saved state beyond its visible buildings: player information, health, and other ongoing data are part of the picture. The documentation points desktop users to the main menu's About area and its Open User Data Directory command to locate their data; saved worlds live under the worlds directory. World files

Before changing an established installation, close the world and preserve a separate copy of its complete folder. Give that copy a date and a clear description of the setup it belongs to. Also record the engine version, game, and enabled mods. This is an editorial backup workflow, not a claim that copying one folder packages every external content dependency automatically.

Understand the actual downgrade boundary

The official 5.12.0 changelog contains a specific compatibility warning: worlds newly created in that version, or explicitly migrated to its newer database layout, cannot be loaded by older versions. Worlds played over the network are unaffected by that particular storage-format change. This does not say that merely opening every older world automatically performs the documented migration. Compatibility notes

Use a copy when evaluating an update, and keep the original backup until you have checked the places and systems that matter to you. A short visit to the spawn point is a weak test of a world whose value lies in distant builds or modded equipment. If a downgrade is needed, restoring a matching backup is a more controlled starting point than repeatedly opening the same working save with different releases. No universal backward-compatibility guarantee covers every game and mod combination.

Install and enable are separate steps

A downloaded mod is not automatically active in every world. The installation documentation says newly installed mods are disabled by default and must be enabled for the intended world. ContentDB installation through the client handles placement and update checks; a manually downloaded archive needs the correct location in the user data directory. Installing mods

For a first customization, choose one addition with a clear purpose. Enable it in a test world that uses the intended game, then check whether its documented content appears. This produces a useful comparison: the same game with and without one change. Adding a dozen packages at once makes it much harder to identify the cause of a missing item or startup error.

Avoid storing multiple copies of the same mod in different search locations; the official guide warns that this can create conflicts. Keep mod security enabled rather than treating an error as a reason to remove safeguards. Follow the package's documented requirements, and retain a record of what you changed. A successful download proves that the files arrived, not that the package is compatible with every world you own.

Preserve the content behind a favorite build

The developer documentation explains how creators maintain older worlds when technical item names change: aliases can connect an old name to a new one, and loading-time migration logic can handle more complex updates. Its stated purpose is to prevent unknown or glitched blocks in players' worlds. World compatibility for creators

Before removing a mod that contributed to a major build, read its maintenance or migration notes. If the documentation is unclear, leave the main world intact and ask the maintainer about the supported path. On a test copy, inspect actual affected buildings rather than only checking that the world launches. Unknown blocks are a reason to stop and investigate the content setup, not to continue dismantling the scene until the warning disappears. This approach protects both the structure and your ability to explain what went wrong.

Use texture packs for visual changes

Texture packs replace the appearance of things such as blocks, items, creatures, and interface elements. The official guide describes installation through Content and the online content browser, followed by selection of the pack. Higher-resolution packs demand more capable hardware. Texture packs

If the goal is a different visual style, begin there instead of changing gameplay mods simply to make the world look new. Compare readability as well as detail: can you distinguish materials you use often, recognize inventory items, and see the shapes of a work area? A pack that looks attractive in a still image may not be the clearest choice for your routine tasks.

Change one visual variable at a time when evaluating performance. Keep a familiar viewpoint and the same world setup so that the comparison answers a useful question. The archival texture example accompanying this article illustrates a visual style, not a controlled performance benchmark or a matched before-and-after test. Texture selection also does not convert a saved world to another game or supply missing gameplay definitions.

Find a community, then verify the destination

The documented discovery routes are the in-game Join Game list, the official web server list, the server forum, or an address supplied by a friend. A connection identifies both an address and a port; selecting an in-game listing fills those values. Finding servers

Read the community's description before joining. For a planned session, confirm the intended game, current connection details, and operator guidance with the group. A similarly named entry is not enough evidence that you have found the same community.

Accounts are registered per server, with no central Luanti login covering every destination. Keep the server identity alongside your credentials, and use a distinct password. The official documentation warns that there is no automatic password recovery mechanism; operator assistance is not guaranteed. If an account does not work, first verify that you selected the right server and used its registered name. Reinstalling the client will not merge separate server accounts. A small connection record is more useful than relying on memory after a long break.

Ask how building protection works before settling in

Protection determines who may modify an area. Luanti's protection documentation describes granting selected players the ability to dig and place within protected land, but it does not establish one universal claiming workflow for every game or community. Protection

Before constructing a shared home, ask the operator or community guide where newcomers are allowed to build and how collaborators receive access. Confirm the difference between visiting, using storage, and modifying the site under that server's rules. Do not infer permission from the fact that you can reach a structure.

Learn the controls your setup actually uses

On the documented U.S. keyboard layout, WASD controls movement, Space jumps, and the mouse handles looking and basic interaction. Left-click is used for punching or mining; right-click uses an interactive target or attempts placement. The settings interface provides control customization. Since 5.12, keyboard bindings are based on physical key positions rather than simply the printed characters, which matters if you change layouts. Controls

Practice in an uncomplicated area before working near a valued build. Confirm which item is selected and whether the object under the pointer is something to use or a surface to build against. That small distinction can explain why an expected placement opens a container instead.

Also separate controls from permission. The documented flight and fast-movement modes require corresponding privileges; a key binding alone does not authorize an action on a server. Check your actual settings after returning from an older release rather than copying a remembered layout. This is a better starting point than assuming that an unfamiliar response means the entire game installation is damaged.

Inventory habits reduce avoidable mistakes

Luanti's inventory documentation describes a default interface, but games and mods can replace it extensively. The usual inventory key is I; the contents and layout depend on the game. Standard stack handling includes left-click for a whole stack, right-click to take roughly half, and Shift-click to move items between relevant inventories when available. Inventory

Learn those interactions using low-value materials before reorganizing important supplies. Pay attention to whether an item stack is attached to the cursor: clicking outside the menu while holding it can throw the stack into the world. A misplaced click during hurried sorting can therefore have a different result from simply closing a panel.

The historical creative-inventory image in this article is an example of interface customization, not evidence that your chosen survival game grants unlimited materials. When an inventory looks different, consult the game's own instructions before assuming content failed to load.

A controller still needs a menu plan

Version 5.17 introduced rewritten gamepad support for moving and interacting with the world. The current gamepad documentation explicitly says menus and graphical interfaces are not yet covered by that built-in support, recommending another input method such as a mouse or touchscreen. Gamepads

Plan the whole session around that limitation. Walking around a landscape and managing a crafting interface are different tasks. Keep the secondary input accessible before joining friends, especially if the selected game relies heavily on inventories. A controller-friendly movement loop does not establish a controller-only experience from launch through logout.

This article has not tested a particular controller model, accessibility configuration, or handheld layout.

Android export has a specific limit

The 5.17 release announcement adds read-only exposure of Android user data to other apps, allowing worlds to be exported through a file manager. It expressly distinguishes this from future write access: importing worlds and mods is not supplied by that new export feature. Version 5.17 announcement

If preserving a phone-built world is the goal, confirm that your exported copy exists at its destination before making changes to the original. Keep track of the game's content requirements as well. Do not plan a desktop-to-phone round trip on the assumption that export and import are symmetrical.

For obtaining the app, the mobile documentation points to official Android distribution through the Luanti website, Google Play, and F-Droid. It warns about unofficial store builds and states that the project does not support iOS. Follow the project's links instead of assuming a similarly named mobile app is the same maintained release. Mobile platforms

Diagnose the symptom before changing the world

A missing image and a missing game are different problems. The troubleshooting documentation explains that a dummy-image warning usually means a mod or texture pack did not supply an expected image; the object receives a replacement appearance. A create-world error about no game being selected instead calls for checking the game selection. Troubleshooting

Write down the exact error, what you were doing, and what changed immediately beforehand. Identify whether the problem occurs in one world, one content setup, or one server connection. That short record gives a maintainer something concrete to investigate and keeps you from changing unrelated settings.

For tonight's session, use a compact preflight: a maintained engine; the intended game or server; the right account for that destination; a recoverable local-world backup where relevant; and input devices that cover both movement and menus. Then start with a small, recognizable task. Luanti's flexibility is most enjoyable when you can tell which layer you are changing, preserve the work you care about, and return to the same community without depending on an obsolete installation.
